Misconceptions are a huge problem in the asexual (ace) community and feed into the way ace people are not taken seriously and/or not believed. The goal of this project was to debunk ace misconceptions so the general public can have a greater understanding and respect for the ace community.
There are an abundance of sources that talk about ace misconceptions. Although, there is always an opportunity to show that information in another way.
The project was informed and inspired by interviews of ace people conducted by Lauren Jankowski, through Asexual Artists (Ex. Top 5 ace misconceptions and supporting data).¹ I was also inspired by expressive typography and thought it was the best way to express this content due to its interactivity and puzzle-like quality.
The concept was to create a branded social media account that would debunk ace misconceptions through typography. Instagram was the perfect platform since it lends itself to a more imagery based experience and has a proven carousal format.
The logo incorporates symbols that are used in the ace community (the black ring and the ace of spades).² Together the elements create a light bulb to reference the purpose of the social media account (to educate).
The phrase debunking a misconception will be split into 2 parts. This gives a problem solving aspect to each post that engages viewers. The slides after that are all supporting information that helps clarify the misconception and adds a human element, through quotes and statistics, based on interviews from Asexual Artists.
